These pronouns have two forms: one for humans and one denoting all other entities. Although they replace nouns, their form encodes only the grammatical feature of case, not those of number and gender.

All these pronouns require a verb in the 3rd p.sg. when used as the subject of a sentence, and when used as a lexical part of a predicate, they agree with the subject in number. e.g. Neko dolazi. Ko su oni? Svako misli na budućnost. Šta su Petar i Milica po zanimanju?
The negative pronouns NIKO and NIŠTA require the verb to be negated as well. In Serbian there is also a rule of double negation as well. e.g. Niko ne dolazi. Ništa se ne dešava.

1. When used with prepositions these pronouns are used as case indicators as well.
2. All other pronouns have the same declension as the interrogative pronoun KO? and ŠTA? (neko, nekoga, nekome, ...).
3. When prepositions are used with the pronouns NIKO and NIŠTA they are placed between the prefix and the pronoun, and everything is written separately. e.g. Ja ne razgovaram ni sa kim. Ni od koga nisam dobio poruku. Ne razmišljamo ni o čemu.
